I’m a pet lover and proud dog owner. I grew up with pets. To me a home isn’t really a ‘home’ without one. Lately I’ve noticed a couple trends, design consideration for pets, and something I really love, pets included in the stylish photos of many popular magazines.

My Advice to anyone considering a pet in their design is pretty simple, keep it durable and make it washable whenever possible. I like to use area rugs with a lower pile that can’t get caught in claws and are easy to spot clean. Using wool or a wool-mix rug that you can clean easily and send out to have professionally cleaned can be an absolute life-saver. A good vacuum is also a must when it comes to keeping those rugs looking good.

If you are lucky enough to be choosing new flooring, consider something that has a somewhat rustic feel. Woods with an already ‘worn in’ look are great, small scratches and wear will become part of their natural charm and character. Keep away from anything too shiny or slippery.

For upholstered pieces, durability is the biggest concern. Look for fabrics meant for heavy traffic areas that are easily cleaned, vacuumed and can handle ‘paw traffic’. I like cotton or cotton blend twills in patterns that are forgiving or colours that don’t show every mark. Slipcovers are also a good option. Do not be afraid to drape a decorative throw that’s easily washed on pieces where Fido and Kitty frequent most, this can be a sneaky way of keeping upholstered items fur free between vacuuming.

Last but not least …don’t be too fussy, enjoy your home. A home is meant to be lived in and should look it! Nothing says ‘lived in’ like a pet snuggled into a sofa!
