I’m a pet lover and proud dog owner. I grew up with pets. To me a home isn’t really a ‘home’ without one. Lately I’ve noticed a couple trends, design consideration for pets, and something I really love, pets included in the stylish photos of many popular magazines.

House and Home

My Advice to anyone considering a pet in their design is pretty simple, keep it durable and make it washable whenever possible. I like to use area rugs with a lower pile that can’t get caught in claws and are easy to spot clean. Using wool or a wool-mix rug that you can clean easily and send out to have professionally cleaned can be an absolute life-saver. A good vacuum is also a must when it comes to keeping those rugs looking good.

Elle Decor

If you are lucky enough to be choosing new flooring, consider something that has a somewhat rustic feel. Woods with an already ‘worn in’ look are great, small scratches and wear will become part of their natural charm and character. Keep away from anything too shiny or slippery.

Elle Decor

For upholstered pieces, durability is the biggest concern. Look for fabrics meant for heavy traffic areas that are easily cleaned, vacuumed and can handle ‘paw traffic’. I like cotton or cotton blend twills in patterns that are forgiving or colours that don’t show every mark. Slipcovers are also a good option. Do not be afraid to drape a decorative throw that’s easily washed on pieces where Fido and Kitty frequent most, this can be a sneaky way of keeping upholstered items fur free between vacuuming.

House and Home

Last but not least …don’t be too fussy, enjoy your home. A home is meant to be lived in and should look it! Nothing says ‘lived in’ like a pet snuggled into a sofa!

Everywhere I look lately there seems to be beautiful little reminders that we are finally ensconced in SUMMER! Here in Canada we take this pretty seriously, we don’t get it for long and we like to enjoy it as much as possible. Getting out to local beaches or up north to our stellar cottage country is the norm this time of year. So for those of us who simply can’t get away, bringing some of the beach or cottage right into your own home is perfect! To me ‘cottage or beach style’ is one of the most comfortable, relaxing and liveable design styles of all time. I’m looking to create that feel for my latest project so I’ve been browsing online and here are some great inspirational images that will make you feel like you’ve just arrived at your own rustic oasis. Enjoy!

My absolute favourite summer getaway is Sarah’s Cottage, She is the master and she does cool and comfortable better than anyone!

I love trying new things, new approaches to old things, re-jigging and re-planning. With everything in bloom there couldn’t be a better time to start something new. So with this in mind I have been (of course) doing some decor changes. I love freshening things up; there is no better way to feel comfortable, content and downright happy than to start with your surroundings. So I decided that I needed to tweak a few things.

My slipcovered IKEA sofa is seems in need of some change. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great sofa, it’s served me well. Like a faithful companion it’s been there for me through a lot, its allowed me to wash it regularly, been beaten down and bruised up, covered in muddy paws and pet hair, various spills and survived quite well. The thought of getting something new seemed irresponsible, and since I’m not one to kick all of the existing furniture in a space to the curb, I decided a new slipcover would be just right. SO I browsed IKEA’s site to see what they were offering, sadly their assortment of machine washable covers was pretty limited.

I remembered an article I read a while back that mentioned a company that made covers for Ikea sofas and chairs, so after a quick Google search, there it was! Bemz www.bemz.com offers an amazing assortment of slipcovers. With solids and patterns made of durable fabrics like Panama Cotton, blends of Belgium Linen, even textured cotton and chenille, there is surely something for any decor. They even offer a relaxed, loose fit slipcover, perfect for cottages and shabby chic decor! With free samples, reasonable delivery times, and competitive pricing, refreshing your old IKEA sofa couldn’t be easier!
